OpenSolaris 2008.05 sucks big time! … WIP …
* The installer CD takes ages to load.
(KNOPPIX/ Hardy Heron Desktop loads much much faster!)
* The rounded GNOME buttons look plain ugly. Hire decent artists.
* no gcc on CD! wtf Sun?
* Retarted package manager. Damn slow!
Does it really download single files one by one? Come on at least publish software in archives. Just copy/use apt at least!
* The shutdown option from GNOME menu doesn’t work always!
* GCC version in repository is 90+MB !!! and is stuck at version 3.4.3
In which age are you living, Sun? At least give us 4.x
* This release is horrible. Better luck next time! *

- next to no audio drivers
- next to no drivers for lan cards
Pathetic . One crippled release after another .The lack of support for lan cards is particularly pathetic . How is one to even attempt fixing problems with the OS if the garbage can’t even do the basic task of connecting to the internet ? Can it be that hard to include drivers for common hardware that has been out for years now ? If you can’t do any better Sun , stop wasting your time and my bandwidth .
Hi Brian,
>>> next to no drivers for lan cards
Agreed about the LAN drivers.
>>> next to no audio drivers
For audio did you try OSS (http://www.opensound.com/)?
I think it should solve audio related issues on solaris.

+ Its slow as hell!
After using FreeBSD 7.0 on 64MB RAM and being used to running
Ubuntu Server, CentOS I find opensolaris to be very slow even on
1GB boxes. It is just me?
Lets hope they do better next time!

I can’t even get it installed. Though I’m running Solaris Express Developers edition on the laptop I’m trying to install OpenSolaris on.
It’s a boat load of fuck, to quote the angry nintendo nerd,
BTW I can install Belenix on it, but f&cking sound doesn’t work. Belenix live works, but my damn wireless stops.
I’m sticking with SXDE.
No LAN support.. enough said. Package system is down even when you get the LAN driver working. Ok, SUN you are a step to late in gathering this marketshare, while we appreciate (as a majority) your attempt at the open source market…. stick with what works for you. Backing existing distros would further your reputation much more than releasing a broken (not well thought out) distro.
hello i have recently used live cd of opensolaris it works fine for me it took only 2-3 minutes to load i have 1GB ram so you know
I dint expect this stuff from sun ,maaahn this ones jst so slow and u need lot of patience to use this and adding it on a multi boot system is jst hectic and horrible,no audio drivers i dnt knw y duid they come up wid such kind of stuff, hope to see them make this into a gudd usefull one
cheers!

Longtime Solaris user. I have a copy of SunOS 4.1.4 (original media) and have used 2.5.1-10.
OpenSolaris is the worst piece of shit I have ever seen from sun. Package management sucks. Everything is broken. “SXDE” (before they canceled it in favor of this shit) is 10x better than this.
2008.11 sucks as well.
It comes down to this. Linux in general is taking Windows and OS X’s table scraps for the Desktop market.
All the changes here piss off long-time Solaris users and try to make it more desktoppy, which many Linuxes do better than this shit.
So Sun is going for TEH WIN by trying to get the table scraps from Linux which is trying to get the table scraps from Windows && OS X?
Retarded.
I’ve been administering Sun since before the advent of Solaris. I can tell you that OpenSolaris is crap and is not really Solaris at all. It appears that the OpenSolaris community is hammering together a kluge that is loosely based on Solaris, but trying to make it as idiot-proof as OS X and have a Windoze look-and-feel. Well, the result is crap. Nothing works as it should and the configuration and functionality IS NOT SVR4. And removing CDE in favor of JDE? What a joke. Stick with Solaris 10 and leave OpenSolaris to the script kiddies.
I’ve just wasted the past 2 hours trying to get a clean installation of OpenSolaris to see the internet, and no luck. You couldn’t be more right… what a POS! Other linux installs I’ve used JUST WORK, no bullshit. I really don’t understand what people see in Sun.
